How it works
Inspire me writes for the pattern and part you have open, so choose those first: open a pattern on the shelf, and pick a part there too (Lead, Harmony, Bass). It uses your notes as context. A counter-melody is written to fit your lead, and a variation starts from what you have already written.
Everything it writes lands on a listening table first. You hear it with the rest of your pattern, then keep it, replace your own notes with it, or throw it away.
The ten directions
- Find a melody
- A tune to build around.
- Build a beat
- Just the rhythm section: rewrites the drums.
- Lay down bass
- A bass line to give the track a foundation.
- Arpeggiate
- Chords, one note at a time.
- Make a variation
- A twist on the notes already in this part. Write a few first.
- Answer the lead
- A second melody that fits around the Lead.
- Explore rhythm
- Evenly spaced, surprising pulses, known as euclidean rhythms.
- Surprise me
- Lets something unexpected happen.
- Fill the pattern
- A whole ensemble at once: parts for several instruments and the drums.
- Sketch a track
- A complete song structure: intro, sections and an ending, as patterns and clips.
Shaping what it writes
- Feeling
- The genre it writes in: SYNTHWAVE, LO-FI, ACID, CHIPTUNE, FUNK, TRANCE, HOUSE, DRUM&BASS, AMBIENT, JRPG, METAL, JAZZ, HYPERPOP, TECHNO, PSYTRANCE or GARAGE.
- Density
- How busy the idea is. Lower is sparse and spacious; higher is packed with notes.
- Seed
- The number behind the dice roll. Leave it blank for a fresh surprise. The seed used is written back into the box, so the same seed and settings give you the same idea again.
If your project has a SCALE set in Write, ideas stay in it. If not, each Feeling uses the scale that suits it. Your sounds and tempo are never changed.
Trying ideas
- Choose a direction, a Feeling and a Density.
- Press Generate idea. The idea appears on the listening table with its direction, genre and seed.
- Press Listen to preview to hear it with the rest of the pattern.
- Not right? Another direction draws a new seed and writes again. Keep going until something catches.
Keeping an idea
- Keep as variation
- Adds a new pattern containing the idea, named after the original with “idea” on the end. Your original pattern is untouched, and you can place either in the song.
- Replace options
- Replace original target writes the idea straight into your pattern instead.
- Discard
- Throws the idea away.
For Sketch a track the choices are Append sections, which adds the sketch after the end of your song, and Replace song arrangement. Whatever you keep, Undo brings back what you had.
TipGenerated ideas make good raw material. Keep one, then change a few notes, the rhythm or the sound: it becomes yours quickly.
What the preview leaves out
Listen to preview renders the idea offline, so it does not include swing, groove, the creative master effects or sidechain. Once you keep an idea, Play in the transport plays it with everything.
